Santa Ponsa -- Gastronomy
Minorca's gin tradition began as a consequence of the presence of the British Navy at its ports in the 18th century. Minorca's gin was a whole new spirit that bore almost no resemblance to Spanish or Mediterranean liqueurs, being also different from the original gin. Yet, it had something from all of them and it was described as a cross between gin and Minorca's own Mediterranean spirits. At present this special gin is consumed by itself, or mixed with lemonade, a cocktail known as pomada. Apart from these stars, Minorca also boasts: oliagua, a soup that is exclusive to the island; dishes such as Minorca-style partridge; above all, lobster caldereta (casserole). This is the most emblematic dish of Minorca and especially of the village of Fornells’, and is often to be found in its restaurants, fiestas and celebrations. As far as desserts are concerned, special mention should be made of Brossat (cottage cheese) pudding, which has clear Moorish influences as can be found in the majority of the island’s sweets.
Rose liqueur, usually consumed at christenings, is another traditional drink that can be tried in Minorca. It is said that many years ago there used to be a great wine-producing tradition in the island. However, at present the vineyards are scarce. This does not keep the island from producing good wines, though, like the ones that are protected by the designation of Wines from the Island of Minorca.Marivent Restaurant, in Mahón, is a great place for Minorcan cuisine and was rated 1 sun by the CAMPSA guide. Ses Salines Restaurant and Cranc Pelut de Minorca are two great places to dine as well, recommended by the CAMPSA guide. They are located in the town of Fornells.
