Matalascañas -- Nature areas
Sierra de las Nieves, a Park which maintains its beauty in its subsoil and on the surface
Sierra de las Nieves Park is doubly important, as the beauty of its mountains and forests is complemented by its extraordinary underground karstic complex.
From a geomorphological point of view, the park is very important. Thus, we find deep abysses, such as that of la Honda and GESM (at a depth of 1,100 metres) or spectacular gorges (such as that of la Caina, with a depth of over 100 metres). But on the surface, the orography and the plant covering offer one of the most beautiful landscapes of all Andalusia. There is a beautiful forest of Spanish firs with an area of 2,000 hectares. There are also several endemisms, such as Narcissus baeticus or Silene mariana. In the higher areas, we ca find the typical high mountain vegetation (junipers, savin junipers and gall oaks) and in the intermediate area, the vegetation is representative of the Mediterranean forest (holm oaks and Aleppo pines). The fauna is also very diverse, with otters, mountain goats, roe deer and fallow deer, and birds of prey such as the Bonelli's eagle, the booted eagle, the golden eagle and the peregrine falcon.
This park is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Andalusia, from a landscape point of view. Its morphological structure is very valuable, with karstic formations and in whose underground spaces the GESM abyss is situated, the third deepest in the world. It is surrounded by the mountainous area of Ronda, and is a partially mountainous region with an extremely valuable forest inventory.
In the towns around the Park, the visitor will find excellent examples of cultural, monumental and artistic heritage. Among these, it is worth highlighting the beautiful historic town of Ronda.
