Reserva de la Biosfera de la Cuenca Alta del Río Manzanares
Im Nordwesten der Autonomen Region Madrid erstreckt sich der Regionalpark Cuenca Alta del Río Manzanares, der 1993 von der UNESCO zum Biosphärenreservat erklärt wurde. Eine Landschaft aus Berggipfeln von bis zu 2.300 m sowie niederen Berglagen und Ebenen von nur 600 m, in der eine Vielzahl mediterraner Arten zu finden ist.

Der Landstrich, der das Stadtgebiet von Madrid mit der Gebirgskette Sierra de Guadarrama verbindet, besitzt dank des Flusses, der dort fließt, einen unschätzbaren Naturwert. In dem Gebiet am Oberlauf, der Cuenca Alta, des Manzanares findet man Berge aus Granitgestein wie La Pedriza - ein Ort, an dem man Gänsegeier und Wanderfalken beobachten kann. Diese schroffe, zerklüftete Landschaft zeigt sich sanfter in der Sierra del Hoyo del Manzanares, wo sie von Eichen- und Eschenwäldern geprägt ist. Diese wechseln sich ab mit Weideflächen für die Viehwirtschaft, die sich auch als Lebensraum für Rot- und Damhirsche eignen. Weideflächen am Wasser findet man vermehrt in den niederen Lagen, z.B. am Santillana-Stausee und bei Soto de Viñuelas, wo eine Vielzahl von Wasservögeln lebt. Diese so genannten agroforstlichen Systeme (Naturweiden, Wiesen und Weideland) sind für die Erhaltung dieses Naturraums besonders wichtig. Das Gebiet um den Flusslauf des Manzanares ist von Baumgalerien aus Weiden, Schwarzpappeln, Eschen und Birken geprägt. Unter den Strauchgewächsen stechen Brombeersträucher, wilde Rosen und Geißblatt hervor. Neben den Rot- und Damhirschen findet man in der Cuenca Alta des Manzanares auch Dachse, Wildkatzen, Fischotter und Wildschweine.

Das geomorphologische Repertoire von La Pedriza ist einzigartig in der Region Madrid. Die Vielfalt der Flora und Fauna des Parks, die sich je nach Höhenlage verändert, ist ein weiterer Naturwert dieser madrilenischen Landschaft.

Innerhalb des Biosphärenreservats stößt man auf verschiedene Bergdörfer, deren Häuser im traditionellen Stil gehalten sind. Die Burg von Manzanares El Real und das Kloster von San Lorenzo de El Escorial (von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt) sind ebenfalls einen Besuch wert.
